Baseball Alumni News

The following letter was emailed to Coach Bolding from former player and Colonel Jay Poole:

Coach Bolding,

It continues to give me great pride to read of all the accomplishments of LONGWOOD Baseball. I wish I could attend the Alumni Festivities on 2 Oct, but regretfully I have to pass. As you know I am at Camp Casey in the Republic of South Korea. I took Command of 2d Infantry Division Support Command in June and have had a full plate since. Immediately had to prepare and send one of my Battalions to Iraq in support of 2nd Brigade, 2d Infantry Division. They will be there at least a year continuing the mission to bring peace and stabilization to the Iraqi's. My remaining units are focused on the continued support of 2d Infantry Divsion as we face restationing and transformation here in Korea. Melanie and the girls continue with steadfast support. Candice is at UVA completing her Masters this year while Julie is at VATECH as a Freshman. Heather is with Melanie in Yongsan near Seoul.

I will wear my "Buddy's Boys" hat on Oct 2 on Camp Casey - a short distance south of the 38th parallel - in support of the game. Please pass along my best to the teams - particularly 79 - 81. Hooah!!

Respectfully, Jay Poole

Batter Up!!

Greetings from Chuck Hagar...
Coach Bolding,
Thanks for the Innovation to the Longwood Lancers Old Timers game, 2 October 2004.   I sure hope you have a wonderful turn out.  I sure hope no one gets any injuries.  I guess in our case you have waited until we are for sure old timers.  Unless this is the first notice that ever caught up to me.
Unfortunately, I will not be unable to attend.  I recently retired from the Army on 31 July 04 after 22 1/2 years.  My family and I settled in Rineyville, Kentucky, about 18 or so miles from Fort Knox.  My last duty station believe it or was Army ROTC at Virginia Military Institute.  I was stationed there from 10 Dec 1998 thru 20 May 2004.
Sorry the Lancers didn't play the Keydets, because I would have loved to see the games.  I am sure the Lancers would still kick their tails.  They haven't really had much over the last year.   Although two years ago they had their best season ever in wins.  I still remember the shelling we gave them.  They probably thought that Hunter was coming back to attack the barracks.  I see that you have them on the schedule four time, three in which are at the Institute.  Fate has its way of putting things.  I wish you luck in the upcoming season.  Best the regards to all the players.  Also send my regards to the family.  I sure hope all is well for everyone.   Have a great day!
By the way did you know Joe DiMaggio came to dedicate their field?  I thought that was impressive.
If anyone takes some pictures please share them on the web.  I would like to see some of the old gang.
One other thing it really would have been nice to see how the Staunton River Vs James River match-up would have turn out after all this time.  In my remembrance, I believe the Knight was holding the upper hand in this battle.  I often wonder how my old roommate is doing.....?  Keep up your great work!
